Summary

Horton the elephant babysits an egg in this classic tale of kindness from Dr。 Seuss。
Everyone laughs when Horton the Elephant offers to sit on Mayzie bird’s egg while she goes on holiday。 Horton’s kindness and faithfulness are sorely tested when he, and the egg, are kidnapped and sold to a circus – but his reward for being faithful is more wonderful than he could ever have dreamed!

With his unique combination of hilarious stories, zany pictures and riotous rhymes, Dr。 Seuss has been delighting young children and helping them learn to read for over fifty years。 Creator of the wonderfully anarchic Cat in the Hat, and ranking among the UK’s top ten favourite children’s authors, Seuss is firmly established as a global best-seller, with over 600 million books sold worldwide。

As part of a major rebrand programme, HarperCollins is relaunching Dr。 Seuss’s bestselling books, including such perennial favourites as The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham and Fox in Socks。 In response to consumer demand, the bright new cover designs incorporate much needed guidance on reading levels, with the standard paperbacks divided into three reading strands – Blue Back Books for parents to share with young children, Green Back Books for budding readers to tackle on their own, and Yellow Back Books for older, more fluent readers to enjoy。 Horton Hatches the Egg belongs to the Yellow Back Book range。

This is great。 It’s about a mother bird who doesn’t want to have to sit on her egg。 She convinces an elephant to sit on it for her, and the story begins。

Horton the elephant is Dr。 Seuss' most sympathetic character。 I must discuss this poor, admirable creature in the first of what I am unofficially dubbing as the "Horton Trilogy。"In this book, a bird unfit to be a mother takes advantage of Horton's kindness, persuading him to sit on her egg while she deuces off to Florida。 Horton suffers all sorts of verbal abuse from his close-minded animal peers and later gets shipped off to the circus。 A life of ridicule and servitude for such a pure and innoc Horton the elephant is Dr。 Seuss' most sympathetic character。 I must discuss this poor, admirable creature in the first of what I am unofficially dubbing as the "Horton Trilogy。"In this book, a bird unfit to be a mother takes advantage of Horton's kindness, persuading him to sit on her egg while she deuces off to Florida。 Horton suffers all sorts of verbal abuse from his close-minded animal peers and later gets shipped off to the circus。 A life of ridicule and servitude for such a pure and innocent creature - come on Doc。The first time I read this to my son, I audibly gasped twice: first when some hunters showed up locked and loaded (guns in a children's book!) and the second when I saw what came out of that egg。 The implications of which。。。never mind。Anyway, the lesson ultimately is if you put your heart and soul into something, no matter what it is, you have some ownership of it。 The bird-mom is nothing but a choosing beggar。 The ending of this book is the antithesis of, say, The Handmaid's Tale, where the commanders and their infertile wives take ownership of children into whom they invest nothing。 So that was nice。 。。。more

What an amazing story of GRIT! Horton could have quit his job as the egg warmer but never does。 He goes through many hardships and stays faithful until the very end。

Horton Hatches the Egg is a classic Dr。 Seuss book that displays the comedy, poetry, and extravagantness that is shown in all of his books。 This book is good for young children as it can help them learn about animals, their place, and also responsibility。 The responsibility of the elephant staying on the egg and hatching it shows how the elephant made a commitment and stuck to it。 This book is。 agreat one by Dr。 Seuss to use with young children。

This is another tale for those who are too kind。 Horton understands that the mother bird needs a break from her work incubating an egg。 She however thinks little of the kind elephant who commits to the job 100%。

KaitandMaddie

Though this was quite good, some of it feels fairly dated - the hunters and the circus in particular。

Surprisingly read to a Year 5 class who totally enjoyed it

What can I say? As a novelist who spends three to five years writing each book, I identify deeply with Horton the elephant。 To me, this story is a profound meditation on the artistic process。 :)

Mikayla Lee

This story was adorable!! It showed Horton keeping his promise and following through even when he probably shouldn’t。 He does what he needs to and he’s rewarded for it。

I had to read this so we could perform it in drama and I hated every moment of it and so did everyone else。 The story was fine, but nobody in my group wanted to work :/

Just another mediocre sequel cashing in on the success of its former。

Good but not one of my favorites。 At the age I read it, the abuse Horton endures was a little disturbing。

Challenge: Book-a-Day-in-May/31 Books in May。 Years before Horton hears his Who, he tenderly sets on an egg at the request of a very lazy bird。 A book in verse that has Horton dredged from his home to New York, traveling the US to Palm Beach, FLA。 Faithful to the end he is rewarded with a nice surprise after fifty-one weeks of incubation。 A happy ending enhanced as always with Seuss' wonderful hyperbolic illustrations。 Challenge: Book-a-Day-in-May/31 Books in May。 Years before Horton hears his Who, he tenderly sets on an egg at the request of a very lazy bird。 A book in verse that has Horton dredged from his home to New York, traveling the US to Palm Beach, FLA。 Faithful to the end he is rewarded with a nice surprise after fifty-one weeks of incubation。 A happy ending enhanced as always with Seuss' wonderful hyperbolic illustrations。 。。。more
